Logos for life

I’ve taken to graphic design lately. More specifically, logos. As you know I love an acronym. And when you put an acronym in a square, it becomes a logo. And that, my friends, is motivational.

I will give you an example. I wrote a while back about being out in the country, working as a contractor on a road project. It’s when I was so angry I had to go to an op shop and buy the amazing pink boots. This is called the FWT. (Fuck Wit Tax).

I’m still working on the same project. I need to digress for a moment to remind any new readers that I actually worked for the Government in NSW on and off for about 15 years throughout my career.

Everyone complains about ‘the government’ and public servants but most of the people I worked with were hard working and earnest. We all wanted to deliver actual outcomes for the citizens of our state.

But either I’m just a cranky (getting old) lady or things have changed. Recently I rang a friend and ex-colleague. This is how the conversation went:

“Just checking that when we worked in the government we did actual work?”

“Yes”

Good talk.

Which brings me to the new logo I designed for a NSW Government department last week. I will leave it to you to work out which department.

I think logos should state your business. People should know what you are there to do.

This sums up what all businesses, including government ones, should aim for. It’s not too hard. I mean it doesn’t say:

Be Awesome or Be perfect.

Goals should always be achievable, so I went with BLS. I mean, surely that is achievable? And also, because it’s yellow, it can be held up, on the spot, like a warning in soccer. Be Less Shit, or the next step is you’re out.

I was so pleased with myself, I went on and made one retrospectively for the primary school my sons attended. No matter how hard you tried you could never get an A. So what was the point of trying?

So back to the government, when they said we couldn’t open the Bypass (that we have been building for 4 years because they asked us to) because everyone in the town might get upset that their town was being bypassed, I realised that Be Less Shit may not actually be possible for some people.

So I had to make this today.

Shout out to Sunshine for being the KOA (keeper of acronyms). We may have invented another one last night while out on the town. With all the 12 year olds. Who don’t wear enough clothes. ROOM (Run Out Of Material).

I say this to you: SANF (Sunshine And Night Forever).

Also bonjour to Claudette from REX Airlines who is the person everyone wishes worked at their airport lounge. She is the GOAT (check the list if you don’t know what this is).
