Once I tried to work out how many times I had moved house. I think it’s about 26 times. That includes living in three countries and a tent. No wonder I never felt like I was from anywhere. Well, not until I moved to the beachside village of Thirroul which is about 60 kilometres (40 miles) from Sydney, Australia. I’ve lived here for nearly twenty years, admittedly in three different houses, and it does feel like home.
So what is with the desire to make another home in France? The constant moving in childhood wasn’t all bad. I was exposed to people and places that changed my world view. Always being new makes you resilient and adaptable. These skills have served me well in my career. The experience also gave me a love of travelling and a desire to experience other cultures by living, not just visiting. And having lived overseas at different times in my life, I know I’m not just having a ‘grass is greener’ moment. So I’m finally from somewhere and I’m going somewhere too.
