The return of the long lunch

Don’t you love a day when you go out for a work lunch at midday and get home at 2am? It’s like the olden days when fun and the long lunch were still allowed.

Last week I caught up with someone who worked in my team a long time ago. Actually she worked in a few of my different teams. Even as a trainee straight out of school she had what people twice her age were lacking.

Common sense. Street smarts. More things that we don’t value as much these days.

The day started swimmingly. I ordered a bottle of Mumm Champagne and couple of tacos. The bill was a $179, which I thought was a little steep considering it was Mumm from New Zealand not the actual French one. It was very tasty, in any case, and also we all know I never ever argue about the bill.

So we’d made a good start on the New Zealand Mumm when the waiter came over, looking sheepish, with another bottle in his hand. I’m so sorry he says, I gave you the wrong one. So he’d charged us for French but provided NZ. It truly was our lucky day. We ended up with both for no extra cost.

The only problem was that I’d organised a job interview that coincided with both the lunch and the second bottle of Champagne. What else could I do, but sit there at the pub, open up my computer and do the interview, surrounded by champagne and with my friend sitting right behind the screen in my eyeline.

She says it was my best work ever. Stay tuned to see if they picked me. We might need more champagne to celebrate.

Once the interview was over and all the champagne consumed, it seemed an ideal time to go for a jam with Billy, the other half of my new duo.

We were going to call our band TBA (Tina and Billy Acoustic) but as Jono pointed out, all that would mean is that every time we were booked for a gig at the Clocks Hotel it would say Band: TBA.

Back to the drawing board for us.

I don’t remember everything else about the night except there were more bars, dancing and a whole host of new friends. This was TBI on steroids.

And there was still an old friend, one who stood by me when no one else did.

I will never forget that. Not ever.

  1. It was truly an amazing day/night! One that is to be remembered for a long time! I think the saying goes “too long between drinks”. You are still an inspiration to me and always will be 🙂 xo

    1. Yes it has been too long between drinks (well with you and I together. Maybe not so long for me just generally!) Likewise with the inspiration.
