Road trip

All that train travel made us yearn for a good old fashioned road trip. And what better place to take the Americans, than to the most Aussie place of all. The Goldie.

Two weeks in Australia and Sherry and Bob had the lingo down pat. Never open your mouth, run all the words together, and most importantly, shorten every single word.

So we left The Gong (Wollongong) and headed for The Goldie (The Gold Coast). We did consider going to FNQ (Far North Queensland) but it was too hot and too far.

I was thrilled to drive past the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour (pronounced CoffsZarba). In the spirit of Bob never stopping at a Point of Interest, I did not slow down

The whole reason for this trip to Oz, RWTH3, was to go to the World Ultimate Frisbee Championships on The Goldie. As we all learnt in Series 1 and 2, Bob is now a huge fan of Ultimate Frisbee. Sherry is a massive fan of Janet and Lucy. Please go back to last season to remind yourselves about them.

We ensconced ourselves in another luxurious apartment with a terrible view, this time of Main Beach. We were staying one block away from the Australian Team, aptly named The Dingoes.

Just as well. Because what we learned from our other road trips to frisbee tournaments in the USA was that our main role was to be Jono’s minions. Usually this would require us to go buy 70 cans of Red Bull a day, or more strangely, many jars of pickles. Apparently the juice is good for replenishing salts.

So we were ready for our role. And we even brought reinforcements. We had Wish from Melbourne and Karen and Gus from Yamba. We had cousins Miles and Eliza. And we also had brother Boat (as in Rowan Boat) and his work colleagues Coops and Portia.

There were many minion tasks required. We had to go and cook dinner. We had to shop for medical supplies to treat all the sliding-on-grass injuries. These jobs were pretty easy for experienced minions like us.

But my favourite one yet was when Wish and I had to stage a daylight robbery. The text came in from the field: Lucy had left his Australian team uniform (required for the game) back at the hotel. Our mission, should we accept it, was to break into their apartment and retrieve said uniform.

We found the key, not at all well hidden, in the garden, entered their apartment and walked out with the uniform. No one blinked an eye. We raced to the grounds just in time for Lucy to run on. Yes we are the greatest and yet kindest robbers in history.

Australia won the bronze medal. They really were very good and you can see highlights from them here. You can also watch the highlights of the whole tournament here. Just in case you don’t know what frisbee is. It’s OK. You will learn.

But the gold medal for the best minions definitely goes to Team Jono.
